Dear all,

Some months ago I thought of starting a newsletter. At that time I didn't have very much impetus for it, but I think I do now. The title of the newsletter is a play on words - it is both about the way that science fiction envisions spaceships and about the way that the weft is transported in a loom. But if we must weave cotton, we must first spin it, and before that we must gin it, and before that we must pick it, and before all that, we must plant seeds. This is the first seed.

Shuttles Through Warp is going to be a weekly newsletter mostly consisting of whatever I am thinking about at the time - weaving, economics, writing, poetry, role-playing games, mental health, the weather. It will rarely be overlong, though if it is I will warn you in advance. Largely, the purpose of the newsletter is to give me a space to document myself. I think a self-reflective practice is quite important to any ongoing engagement with the world. With any luck, this will be mine.

I write this on Saturday April 4, but I hope to actually send this out sometime next week, so I can properly think about what I'd like to write about in the future.

When I worked as a journalist, my bureau chief would end his emails Brgds - Best Regards. I found this endearing and funny.

Cheers,

mvs
